Orrell Holgate Primary has a Governing Body of 17.
What the Governing Body does
The introduction of the 1986 Education Act required schools to have volunteer
Governors and gave the opportunity to parents to become involved in the running
of the school. In recent years the powers and duties delegated to the Governing
Body has increased considerably.
The Governing Body works with the Headteacher to:
- Ensure that pupils receive the best education possible with the resources available;
- Determine the vision, mission, aims and curriculum policy of the school;
- Strategically manage and allocate the school budget;
- Determine policies on pay, discipline and grievance procedures;
- Determine other policies following Wigan Council Children and Young People’s Services guidelines;
- Determine the staffing levels, interview and appoint staff;
- Ensure the upkeep of the building and school grounds;
- Decide how the school is to be used outside school hours;
- Monitor, Review and Evaluate the School Development and Improvement Plan, pupil performance standards and entitlement to a broad and balanced curriculum for each child;
- Market the school to attract new pupils and develop relationships with parents and the local community.
-
- Full Governing Body meetings are held each term. In addition, the Governing Body has two committees: (1) Asset (2) Curriculum & Learning.. These committees meet regularly to discuss specific issues/items and make recommendations to the Full Governing Body.
-
- All Governors welcome the views of parents with regard to school matters and all can be contacted through school 01942-776670.
-
- Minutes of Governors meetings (except confidential minutes) are available to be read by parents on request.
-
- In the same way, school policy documents are also available to be read. (There is a reasonable charge to cover photocopying.)
-
-
-
- The Standards and Framework Act 1998 introduced changes to the membership of governing bodies and their power and responsibilities. On 1st September 1999 all schools entered one of the new categories of school - community, foundation, voluntary aided, voluntary controlled. Orrell Holgate is now a Community School.
- The two main functions of a Governing Body are as follows:
-
- Responsibility for the conduct of the school;
-
- There is a duty to conduct school with a view to promoting high standards of educational achievement at the school.
